Abstract

Presented at the 2017 CEA Conference in Hilton Head, SC, this essay offers an interdisciplinary approach to general education and graphic design through narrative theory.

Author Biographies

Angela L. Dow, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University

Angela Dow co-developed the annual New York seminar for graphic design students; the Design and Innovation Management concentration/certificate for Ferris State University's MBA program; and the new Digital Media program at Kendall with animation focus. She was listed in Who's Who in American Education in 2004, is a member of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), a faculty advisor for KCAD's student AIGA group, a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals), and a member of DMI (Design Management Institute). In addition to her work at Kendall, Angela has numerous clients she works with in the industry.

Susanna Kelly Engbers, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University

Susanna Kelly Engbers teaches rhetoric, writing, and literature courses; she also currently serves as chair of the General Education program. She earned her Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition in 2004 from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Her dissertation focused on the rhetoric of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the nineteenth century’s most prominent suffrage proponents. Engbers continues her scholarship on the history of women’s rhetoric, having presented numerous conference papers on the topic and published articles in scholarly journals including Rhetoric Society Quarterly (RSQ). In addition, she has served as a peer reviewer for RSQ. She also speaks regularly at national conferences such as the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the Rhetoric Society of America on the pedagogy of composition and visual rhetoric. She has also published articles in those areas inTETYC and Forum. One recent area of scholarship has been on the role of study in visual rhetoric in the art and design college setting.
